As the sun dipped below Singapore’s iconic skyline on 9 August 2024, the Promontory @ Marina Bay hummed with anticipation.
Among the thousands of attendees gathered for the NTUC x NDP Bay Celebrations were three beneficiaries supported by the NTUC-U Care Fund. Their journeys epitomised resilience, hope, and the power of community support.
A Father’s Dream
Leng Say Boon stood at the water’s edge, his eyes reflecting the gleaming lights of the bay. His two young children fidgeted excitedly beside him, their faces filled with wonder.
“This is our first live National Day celebration. Watching the parade and fireworks is bringing us closer together in ways I never imagined,” Mr Leng shared.
As a single father, Mr Leng, who works as a taxi driver, had faced his share of challenges. But tonight, those worries seemed distant.
“The NTUC-U Care Fund has given me the means to provide my children with better educational opportunities and ensure their well-being. I can focus on nurturing their potential without the weight of financial worries,” he said.
As the evening progressed, Mr Leng exuded renewed hope.
“I envision my children flourishing in a Singapore full of opportunities. This night has reignited my determination to create the best future for them,” he said, hugging his kids close.
Triumph Over Adversity
Nearby, Shalawati Samuri stood with her husband and their three sons who are all pursuing tertiary education.
Despite her recent battle with cancer, her smile radiated warmth and gratitude.
“By being part of the Bay Celebrations, we feel a deeper sense of belonging and pride to be Singaporean,” she said, looking to the diverse crowd around them.
“Experiencing this in person highlights the unity and cohesiveness among us. It makes us feel incredibly connected to Singapore.”
Ms Shalawati’s journey had not been easy, but programmes like the NTUC Care Fund (Youth Enable) had been a beacon of hope.
“These programmes empower young Singaporeans to overcome obstacles and remain motivated. This support is essential in enabling our youth to aspire to achieve their goals despite facing setbacks in life,” she said.
As the night wore on, Ms Shalawati reflected on the evening’s significance: “Given our family’s challenges, we’re extremely grateful for this opportunity.
“It’s given us a renewed sense of hope to work through our challenges and a greater appreciation for the community and resources available to us.”
Embracing Inclusivity
As the celebrations continued, Tan Lian Chye found himself surrounded by friends, their excitement palpable in the festive atmosphere. Though his family was not with him, he felt their presence in his heart.
“Participating in these celebrations has allowed us to experience the collective joy and pride of being Singaporean,” Mr Tan shared, looking around at the vibrant crowd.
“We’re able to spend quality time with friends at the event, creating lasting memories.”
The NTUC Care Fund had been a crucial support for the Tan family.
“It’s been a lifeline, helping us cover the additional expenses associated with caring for our daughter with special needs,” Mr Tan said.
His message to other families facing similar challenges was one of hope: “NTUC offers a wide range of support services and resources that can make a significant difference. We’re grateful for the support given to our family.”
A Symphony of Unity
As spectacular fireworks painted the sky in a dazzling array of colours, everyone stood in awe, their faces illuminated by the vibrant display.
The evening brought together people from all walks of life, each with their own story, yet united in love for their country and gratitude for the support they had received.
NTUC Care Division Director Melvin Yong reflected on the significance of the event: “I am glad that the NTUC x NDP Bay Celebrations’ organisers have included our U Care Fund beneficiaries and their families in the National Day celebrations at the Promontory. The participants enjoyed themselves very much, and the U Care Fund hopes to offer more of such experiences for our members and their families.
“Beyond financial assistance, the NTUC Care Division will do more to enable our members and their children to build a brighter future.”
The Bay Celebrations were more than just a night of entertainment for these families. They were a testament to the power of community and the spirit of unity that defines Singapore.
